About the Programme

The global mining sector is a key contributor to economic growth, providing critical inputs for both manufacturing and construction. It’s sustainability, however, requires the development of a robust talent pipeline, capable of delivering the skills needed to drive innovation, develop projects, and sustain growth.

Skills gaps are threatening the mining sector across all occupations and regions. Australia, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, and all major mining hubs are grappling with this issue. While occupational shortages exist among geologists, engineers, technicians, data analysts and automation experts, among others, mining is no longer an aspirational industry for young talent. In Australia, enrolment in mining engineering has declined 63% since 2014, while in the US the number of mining graduates has dropped by 39% from 2016. Here in South Africa the sector employs only 500 mining engineers, with an average age of 47. This demonstrates a global shift away from mining and an impending talent crisis.

This Conference seeks to address the mining skills gap in Africa. It brings together experts, industry and stakeholders, offering a platform to share information and seek collaborative solutions. Topics include investments in training and education in partnership with universities and vocational institutions; embracing diversity and inclusion in all its forms; and leveraging new technology to improve recruitment and retention.

The Mining Skills & Apprenticeship Africa Conference confronts these challenges by promoting collaboration within the sector. It provides a platform for industry professionals, educators, government representatives, mining companies, apprenticeship providers, and other stakeholders. The Conference encourages discussion around best practice and innovative ideas to enhance skills development and training within the mining workforce.

Delegates will leave the Conference ready to reprioritise their recruitment task and invest in new talent strategies.

Looking forward to your participation.
