Africa is the most resource-abundant continent, with vast reserves of gold, diamonds, oil, natural gas, copper, uranium, and other minerals. It possesses arable, underutilised land and a wealth of human capital. Despite this, Africa lags behind other continents in various developmental aspects. Socio-economic disparities, infrastructure challenges, and the persistence of small and unsophisticated economies highlight the urgency and importance of the role played by State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
SOEs play an instrumental role in fostering economic development. However, African SOEs grapple with significant governance failures attributed to inadequate accountability, state capture, and ambiguous objectives. Addressing these challenges raises the need for achievable profitability targets and enhanced accountability aligned with corporate objectives. Moreover, governments and their constituents must demand that SOEs fulfil their developmental role. The 2024 SOE Conference will address the challenges faced by SOEs, the role of SOEs in the development agenda, as well as other tools for improved SOE management and reform.
